There’s a lot more than hair bouncing around Erykah Badu’s head. Three songs into her latest release, New Amerykah, she declares music the most powerful influence in the world, goes on a mission to reclaim her 42 Laws from Big Brother, and shouts out Louis Farrakhan. She may be the only contemporary artist finding the happy, yet slippery, medium between socio-political commentary and funky soul music. Even when using a nearly identical sample of RAMP’s “The American Promise” for her opening track “Amerykahn Promise,” Badu avoids derivation, breathing a fresh spirit and a touch of humor to the anti-brainwashing sentiments you think you’ve heard before.
