KRS & Uncle Ralph choppin’ it up post performance. Plus: Kris doing drops, interviews, signing autographs, philosophizing, and blessing little babies into the twilight. You gotta love it!
big ups to State Of The Arts Ent. for the footage.
There are a ton of videos on Youtube from Saturday - good looks to all who have posted them. More BHF08 wrap-up on the way, including interviews, overviews, and other views…
We collaborated with rising fashion house Emperial Nation to create some one of a kind t-shirts. We posted some pics of them the other day in the Festival section, but we have more info for those interested: T-shirts are $15 and will be available on site at The Fest. They are limited edition and a definite collector’s item.
For those that still haven’t heard, the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival is having a special promotion. If you take this embed lil’ playlist right here and post it on your blog, Mypsace, Facebook, etc. and send the link to imeemcontests@gmail.com, you could win some fly gifts. With the Festival just days away, we figure we put you on to Sputnik Brown, one of the acts who will be showing off their respective talents at the powerHouse Arena on Friday evening. So who exactly is Sputnik Brown? They are the following:
If memory serves correctly, this little banger came out on a Hiero compilation a few years back, just before the phrase REAL TALK lost all of it’s meaning and gradually became down right insulting. Never saw the video, but it’s a good example of how dope Ladybug Mecca is/was/will be at the Fest… wink wink, nudge nudge.
Just added to our FREE Friday July 11th date at powerHouse… The Dead Eye, With the Red Eye, From Chi to L.I… The Great Datty X
Sadat has so many classic lines, it’s not even funny. Most of my favorite non sequiturs hardly even rhyme… shit like “I’m responsible for that body in the alley / I’ll Louisiana Purchase that ass with with Remy’s purchase(?) / and hard shots of Tequila, where the dancin girls?” or “The Brand Nubian combo, Grand Puba ensemble / We’ll make a n*gga hungry, give him a piece of fried fish / Known Alamo for 25 years!”
THIS RIGHT HERE may be one of the best verses in hip hop history though. Glad to have X man back to rock with us this year.
While we know a lot of kids are already hyped to see LA super duo BLU & EXILE rock this year’s BHF, there is a tiny yet notable contingency of Brooklynites (see; the over 25 crowd) that have still yet to become aware of their existence. OK, that was a gross generalization… Either way, can’t hurt to revisit / get to know them a lil better:
We’re officially LESS than two weeks out peoples - clear your schedules! Not sure how to navigate our BHF programming calendar? Big Homie has you covered.
“Do they respect the basic principles of hip-hop? If they have their own fresh methods of dress and expression and give back to our community, then you can call them whatever you want… it’s all hip-hop. The importance is: are we having fun? That’s what makes you official… Are they progressing the culture, or exploiting it? If it’s the latter, well, I’m not really concerned with it. Maybe it gets eaten up by the youth, or you can step to the stage at the festival and let the real fans of hip-hop deal with you.” - KRS ONE, speaking with BODEGA™ contributor Eavvon O’neal about (what else) hipster hop. Check the rest of this exclusive convo HERE…
Also on the BODEGA™ this week: YELLOW REBEL was at the G-UNIT Terminate On Sight listening party… 50 cent, not so much. Check the review HERE…
“A student of Hip-Hop will know that you cannot underestimate the importance of Ralph McDaniels and Video Music Box. He saw the need to archive and document our culture before MTV, and (long) before YouTube. Without him, I am not sure Hip-Hop as an art form or as a business would be the multi- billion dollar industry that it is today. We are his children and the Festival is a continuation of the trailblazing spirit manifested by Ralph and all of our other elders” - Swifty
For the third straight year, legendary VJ and Hip-Hop pioneer Ralph McDaniels will serve as host of the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival’s main performances date. Uncle Ralph, as he affectionately known, has been hosting the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival since it moved to Empire Fulton Ferry State Park in 2006. More than just a host, Ralph has been an ambassador for the Festival. We honored to have him back on our stage.
Canada has given the world so many generous gifts. Flannel shirts. Degrassi High. Marc Summers and other 80’s/90’s Nickelodeon personalities. Even today, Canadian exports continue to enrich the lives of their southern neighbors in the United States. Take this lovely lady here: Zaki Ibrahim. A talented vocalist, born in the land of ice hockey and ham style bacon (so ignorant!) and raised between homes in South Africa and her native Vancouver - Zaki Ibrahim is currently building a reputation as an international musical sensation.
Check for Zaki Ibrahim via her website and myspace page…
and DEFINITELY don’t miss her performance this summer at BHF08!!

Remember waaaaaay back when Ian was talking about Mickey Factz? We do. 10 internet years later (that’s like one or two actual calendar years) Mr. Factz has been drafted to perform at the 2008 Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival. BODEGA™ contributor Yellow Rebel sat down with Mickey for a casual, yet informative conversation. Here it is for you to read.
In case you missed the news, 88-Keys, your mellow your man, is performing at this years BHF. A staunch believer that knowledge equals power, and that literacy helps curb violence, KRS-ONE will speak about the importance of reading, answer questions, sign autographs and take pictures with children who will be off from school for Brooklyn-Queens Day, and signing up for summer reading. The Summer Reading kick-off will offer tons of fun, free activities for kids of all ages beginning at 12:00pm with performances from the Big Apple Circus. Mr. Met will also be on hand to sign autographs and take pictures. And, of course, when children sign up for the summer reading program, they will receive the summer’s booklists, special reading goodies and much more.
Wow. KRS ONE + Big Apple Circus + MR. MET?? Grab the little dunn in your life and get over to Grand Army Plaza. It’s a win win, as in you can’t lose.
