Musiq (formerly Soulchild now back to Soulchild) will be at he legendary Apollo next week.
This cat was neo-soul before all you blade runners decided that the term was uncool.
We almost had him for the Festival this year (or was it last year?)
The price tag was muy caliente but I would (and will) go see him at the Apollo with the wife.
I was a little skeptical about the Retro Kidz just as many of you are about these Hipster groups. I mean let’s be honest, A lot of kids are all icing, no cake. While some the jury is out on some, some have failed and some have passed we will get a good look at a contender tonight - The Retro Kidz with their first featured performance that has popped up on the Bodega radar.
What I like about the Retro Kidz is that they are overt about the elephant in the room. They are 80’s, 90’s throwbacks. Maybe they are gimmicks but in looking at them I think they are more like walking documentarians or archivists. A lot of these groups best exemplified by The Cool Kids present their 80’s style as their own. There is no open recognition of the creators of the TROOP, flat top, rope chain, Ewings, Nike Blazer, Cazals style. It is almost like they are trying to pull a fast one and convince the ignorant that this is theirs.
The Retro Kidz don’t take themselves that seriously and I like that. They have a well thought out product and can actually rhyme better than expected.
I think Pac Div is the best of these 80’s throwbacks; The Cool Kids have cracked the code the best. We’ll see how the Retro Kidz measure up after tonight.
We’ll see y’all tomorrow night
