Our aim is to highlight Hip-Hop’s legacy as an agent of artistic progression, community building and social change. We do this by producing a variety of events from musical performances, Brooklyn Hip-Hop Family Day, film screenings, gallery shows and more. In an effort to create a truly open event Brooklyn Bodega does everything in their power to keep the Festival affordable. Brooklyn Bodega Brooklyn Bodega is a complicated animal. Creators of the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. Top notch blogazine (blog meets magazine). Cultural programmers. Hip-Hop Advocacy Group. The Bodega was founded in 2006 by Wes Jackson as the online home of the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. Editorially, the Bodega strives to add a more academic voice to the world of Hip-Hop journalism. We delve deep into issues facing the Hip-Hop community. From music business to politics to technology we offer a professional and intellectual voice. 2009 Programming June 18th: The Photo Exhibit at Galapagos Art Space and After Party with Qool Marv The photo exhibit celebrates the past four years of the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival. We have thousands of outstanding images that capture all the wonderful moments we've been able to create for ourselves and for the public at large. We've had an impact on local (and not so local) Hip-Hop fans, families and kids throughout Brooklyn, the artists who have performed, our volunteer staff, and random folks who just happened to walk in to our event. This is our opportunity to reflect back and show people what quality, classic Hip-Hop looks like. Qool DJ Marv is the only DJ on the planet with a resume that includes playing at venues in every major American city, worldwide, and at special events of the entertainment elite. Currently, Marv plays twice a month in the Bahamas at the high end Kerzner resort hotel, the Cove Atlantis, as well as at three venues in New York City’s East and West Villages. In demand globally, his worldwide itinerary includes annual visits to play in Barcelona, Moscow, London, Glasgow, Oslo, Dublin, Dubai, and Paris. There is a method to his magic in the way Qool DJ Marv presents and plays music. He tunes into the atmosphere of the venue and the energy of the people, and then he blends what he sees with what he hears. Intertwining many styles for many faces from many places, Qool DJ Marv captivates you with his blend. The effortless flow and continuously ascending momentum of his wide-ranging sets is inviting, hypnotic, and breathtaking. Family Day (12-4pm)
This year Brooklyn Bodega and F.O.K.U.S. reunite to produce, Brooklyn Hip Hop Family Day. On June 20th, 2009, babies, toddlers, young teens and families are encouraged to head down to beautiful Empire Fulton Ferry State Park for an afternoon of Hip-Hop, community building, and fun. Family Day will take the main stage from 12 p.m to 4 p.m. From 4p.m. to 8p.m. Family Day will move to the North Lawn of Empire Fulton Ferry State Park while the main performances round out the day.
Children, families, teenagers, and kids are all welcome all day to this all ages event.
Family Day will feature music, performances, demonstrations, and seminars from a host of organizations including Black Girls Rock, Metropolitan Hospital, The Beacon Program, The League of Young Voters, CityYear, Brooklyn Crescents Youth Lacrosse Team, and SohNup Industries NYC to name a few. More organizations will be confirmed as the event approaches.
Family Day will take the main stage on June 20th from 12 p.m to 4 p.m.
From 4p.m. to 8p.m. Family Day will move to the North Lawn of Empire Fulton Ferry State Park while the main performances round out the day.
Main Day Performances (4-8pm)
The Festival is more than a concert or outdoor fair. It is a more of a family reunion for lovers of this great culture. People come from Flatbush to Berlin to enjoy the Brooklyn sun. Our hope is to produce a world class event in Brooklyn where the best and brightest travel to Brooklyn. As well as celebrating Hip-Hop culture we want to establish Brooklyn as a worldwide destination. We also endeavor to support local artists from Brooklyn and the NYC area while not creating an insular event for, by and in Brooklyn. The Main Festival features two stages, a main stage and a second stage. Artists will be performing on both stages from 4pm-8pm.

June 20th: Official After Party “All For One” with Tanya Morgan and Buckshot
For the official after party of our 5th Annual Festival we want to highlight the sense of cooperation and comradery that we have fostered since 2005. Last year we brought Detroit to Brooklyn with PPP, House Shoes and Invincible.
This year’s theme is “All For One” There will be a Live Jam Session and throwdown, hosted by and featuring the Legendary Buckshot (Black Moon, Duck Down.)
Tanya Morgan consists of MC Donwill and llyas who are from Cincinnati, Ohio and Von Pea is from Brooklyn, New York. Von Pea and Donwill, already regular collaborators after having met on the okayplayer.com message board, decided to work on a full-length album together. Ilyas, who along with Donwill comprised a hip-hop duo known as Ilwill, joined the project as a third member. Their critically acclaimed debut album, Moonlighting, came out in 2006. Tanya Morgan has collaborated with hip-hop acts such as Nicolay, Fat Jon, and 88 Keys. The group performed at the 3rd annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival with Ghostface Killah, Large Professor, Consequence, and others. Their third album release “Brooklynati” based on the creation of a fictitious city combining elements of both Cincinnati, Ohio and Brooklyn, New York came out on May 12, 2009.
We chose Buckshot as he was once in the position that many rappers like Torae, Skyzoo, Pac Div, Mickey Factz and more find themselves in now. A hot rapper with a buzz, a great album, and a deal. He turned that into a legendary career and business. Now over 15 years later Buckshot leads the most relevant independent Hip-Hop label, Duck Down and is mentoring the next generation and ushering in a second Golden Era of Hip-Hop.

Stic Man and M-1 of dead prez have carried the mantle for social change and intellectual revolution for over 10 years. Steadfast in their commitment these social activists/artists are the true conscious of Hip-Hop. They released the critically acclaimed “Let’s Get Free” in 2000, which spawned the anthem “Hip-Hop.” Other releases included 2003’s “Turn Off The Radio”, 2006’s “Can’t Sell Dope Forever” and several solo projects. On June 23rd they are releasing their new project with DJ Green Lantern entitled “Pulse Of The People.”
Torae and Marco Polo
Remarkable duo of beat and rhymes, combined of Canadian producer Marco Polo and Brooklyn MC Torae. The duo teamed up in 2009 to release their collaborative album Double Barrel, after Polo’s critically acclaimed album Port Authority and Torae's lyrically mastered Daily Conversation.
Pharoahe Monch
Intelligent and critically acclaimed, best known for his smash single, “Simon Says” from 1999’s Internal Affairs album and his classic collaboration with Mos Def and Nate Dogg “Oh No.” He was the co-founder of the legendary duo Organized Konfusion with partner Prince Po. With a new album Desire, Monch has been pushing the envelope on lyricism and artistry for almost twenty years and there is no sign of him letting up anytime soon.
DJ Premier
Legendary DJ, one half of Gangstarr, and prolific producer, Premier is a pillar of Hip-Hop culture. Premier has been the hip-hop game for over 20 years with the release of Gagnstarr’s ‘No More Mr. Nice Guy. After what Premier did for Notorious B.I.G. on ‘Ready to Die’ he became an anchor for Hip-Hop. Today he’s still making hits for everyone from Maroon 5 to Termanology.. Despite his commercial success he never lets fame, success, or finances stop him from working with whom he wants.
Styles P
Styles P is an MC who gives you the streets, straight no chaser, with a no nonsense lyrical style . He first stormed the scene as a member of the trio The LOX consisting of Styles, Jadakiss, and Sheek Louch. The LOX released the classics, “Money, Power, Respect” and “Wild Out.” After leaving Bad Boy the trio has embarked on successful solo careers. Styles P dropped his solo debut A Gangsta and A Gentlemen in 2002 and since has dropped two other solo albums and countless mixtapes.
Grand Puba
Grand Puba is the founding member of the legendary group Brand Nubian and living legend. Well respected for their intelligent and politically charged flow, Brand Nubian influenced many of today’s rap groups including Wu-Tang, Dead Prez, Black Star, and countless others. Brand Nubian’s leader Grand Puba was behind such classics singles such as “360 (What Goes Around Comes Around)” “Slow Down” and “I Like It. Puba cemented his own solo career with the 1992 release of Reel to Reel and his follow up 2000 in 1995. Grand Puba is set to release a highly anticipated solo album on June 23rd, entitled Retroactive.
Uncle Ralph McDaniels
Ralph McDaniels host of the extremely significant “Video Music Box” and founder of Onfumes.Com Ralph McDaniels will be returning for his fourth year hosting the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival. Created in 1983 Video Music Box was one of the most influential shows to give urban artists mainstream exposure, debuting artists such as Nas, Wu-Tang, and Biggie. Ralph’s latest venture OnFumes.com takes that same pioneering spirit to the purely digital medium.
Smif N Wessun
Tek and Steele, formerly known as the Cocoa Brovaz, are pillars of Hip-Hop’s Golden era, debuting on the scene in 1993 as members of the Boot Camp Clik. The duo made a memorable appearance on Black Moon’s Enta Da Stage then later released their own classic debut, Dah Shinin’. Since then, Smif N Wessun have continued to make music and tour the world. Their New York grit and hardcore underground appeal have weathered the ever fluctuating hip-hop landscape from gangsta rap, to shiny suits. They are currently prepping a new album for release this summer.
Tanya Morgan
Founded in 2003. Von Pea and Donwill, met on the okayplayer.com message boards, and decided to work on a full-length album together with future member Ilyas. Having played the Festival in 20087 Tanya Morgan return to the BHF fresh off the release of their album ‘Brooklynati'
J Period
Mixtape King with a long-list of accolades under his belt (2X Mixtape DJ of the Year, 3X MTV Top DJ) and a roster of A-List collaborators including The Roots, Lauryn Hill, Nas and Mary J. Blige, J.Period has earned a reputation for stellar quality and respect for true hip hop culture. At this years Hip Hop Festival J. Period will be performing “The J. Period Live Mixtape,” an exciting 20 minute DJ performance back to back hip hop guests and surprise hip hop legends.
Donny Goines
Relentless rhymes and no nonsense demeanor, Donny Goines is one of the exceptional youth who are born into a life surrounded by poverty and drugs, but are able to question their surroundings, and use their personal creativity to raise themselves out of their dire situation. Donny uses his negative experiences to create positive lyrics and performances. He recently offered his entire album Breakfast Club for a free download on the Internet. His most recent album Minute after Minute was released May 19th.
Tiye Phoenix
Tiye Phoenix truly exceeds all boundaries of a female mc. She is a classically trained pianist, producer, songwriter, and composer. Tiye is a member of the hip-hop group Polyrhythmaddicts which consists of members DJ Spinna, Shabaam Sahdeeq, and Mr. Complex. They released a critically acclaimed album Break Glass in 2007. Tiye Phoenix’s debut solo album Half woman Half Amazin is set to release May 26th.
Keys N Krates
The dynamic and innovated live band KeysNKrates will be the house band at this years Festival. Made up of DJ Jr. Flo, keyboardist Matisse, and drummer Adam Tune, Keys N Krates combine the visceral intensity of live music with the progressive technology of electronic music. The trio remix classic hip-hop songs live, using turntables, audio, keyboards, and drums. KeysNKrates sufficiently combine the old with the new providing fresh versions of classic hip hop tracks such as The Fugees “Fu Gee La”, A Tribe Called Quest “Check the Rhyme”, and Jay-z “Public Service Announcement.”
Nyle
Recent graduate of the Clive Davis School of Recorded Music of New York University Nyle is a positive, young MC from Philadelphia. Nyle took his studies seriously, promising to release an album for each year in college. In 2007 he released his debut Album Frosh, which detailed his freshman year at NYU. It quickly garnered a buzz. In 2008 Nyle released his second album S’more a more experimental album that included samples and remixes of artist such as The Flaming Lips and Citizen cope. Nyle’s talent was brought to the attention of many when a video was released of him and his class at the Clive Davis School performing a live remake of Lil Wayne’s “Let the Beat Build.” Including drums, violins, vocalists, piano, and guitars the video is electric and fresh
Eagle Nebula
Described by some as an eccentric and witty female lyricist Eagle Nebula calls herself the “ghetto sage.” She draws inspiration from artists such as De La Soul, Sun Ra, and Fela Kuti. Born and raised in California, Eagle Nebula harkens back to the golden age of hip-hop with lyrics that are fun, clever, and politically conscious. Her album Cosmic Headphones was released in October of 2008. It is a unique mix of funk and soul inspired beats interlaced with Nebula’s poetic and energetic delivery.
Metermaids
Metermaids is two New York emcees, Swell and Sentence, and DJ Caboose (aka Tom Kennedy.) Backed by guitar playing, beat making and production prowess. Their latest album Nightlife released on 27 Sound, is like a raucous Saturday night out in New York City—It’s the live energy of the Beastie Boys, the anthemic rock of U2, and the fun and sounds of Motown, brought all together to create a brand new sound in hip hop music.

Trio from Queens, Children Of The Night (COTN) consist of Versa, Remy Banks & Lansky. Marc and April Show and Prove winner’s they won the bodega crowd over. OTN is currently prepping their freshmen mixtape release.
Brown Bag All Stars
In early 2008, eight artists employed by Fat Beats New York decided to form a rap group. Every day they sold records to customers who want good, honest music. They figured they knew enough to make it themselves. They
were right. The name they chose was The Brown Bag All-stars. They consist of Audible Doctor, J57, Cold Codeine, Koncept, Soul Khan, E Holla, Element, and Goo.
Tanya Morgan
Tanya Morgan is a rap group. And that seems apparently clear after their soon-to-be-classic sophomore album, Brooklynati (out May 12 on Interdependent Media) started and earning them Native Tongue comparisons from the likes of Billboard, Vibe, Spin, and XXL Magazine. "Tanya Morgan are like the sons of De La Soul -- soulful, stressed, effortlessly smart flows, intricate production, the whole package," says SPIN Music Editor Charles Aaron. The trio from Brooklyn and Cincinnati produce their own beats and have crafted a concept album called Brooklynati, based on a fictionalized golden-era hip-hop utopia and their individual journies from the real world to get there. Features include Phonte from Little Brother, British expatriate Che Grand and buzz-worthy California MC Blu. The video for "So Damn Down" - the lead single from Brooklynati - is currently in rotation on MTVu and MTV Jamz, and featured on BrooklynBodega.com. Tanya Morgan recently toured with Wale and performed at The Roots Jam Session in NYC; they are currently organizing a "Brooklynati Summer Tour", coming soon to a city near you.
