Pharoahe Monch
The intelligent and critically acclaimed Pharoahe Monch is on board for this year's event. Monch is most known for his smash single, "Simon Says" from 1999's Internal Affairs album and his classic collaboration with Mos Def and Nate Dogg "On No", however he is far from a flash in the pan rapper. He was the co-founder of the legendary duo Organized Konfusion with partner Prince Po. Monch has been pushing the envelope on lyricism and artistry for almost twenty years and there is no sign of him letting up anytime soon. With a new album, Desire, and collaborations with producers The Alchemist and Black Milk, old school to new school alike respect the Pharoahe. His unique delivery and wordplay make him one of the most popular New York rappers and we at the Brooklyn Bodega are excited to have him on board.
DJ PREMIER
The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival announced today the addition of the legendary DJ Premier to the 2009 lineup.
This is DJ Premier’s second appearance at the BHF. Last year he accompanied KRS ONE and Buckshot as headliners of the 2008 jam. One of the few regrets from 2008 was Premier’s shortened set. This will not be a problem in 2009 as Brooklyn Bodega, creators and producers of the Festival, jumped at the opportunity to bring back one of the greatest producers and DJ’s in Hip-Hop.
Equally lauded as one half of Gangstarr with longtime partner Guru and as producer in his own right Premier is a pillar of Hip-Hop culture. He has crafted classics for Notorious B.I.G. (“Unbelievable”, “Kick In The Door”), Jay Z (“Friend or Foe”, “So Ghetto”), Nas (“Nas Is Like”, “New York State of Mind”) and host of others including The Black Eyed Peas, Snoop Dogg, Christina Aguilera, Ludacris and 50 Cent. However, what has made Premier so unique is that while he helped build Gangstarr into one of the best yet, been the go to guy for the best in the game, he has always remained true to his underground roots. MOP, Big L, Mos Def, J-Live, Common, Dilated Peoples as well as developing acts Torae, NYG’z, and Blaq Poet have all also worked with DJ Premier.
“DJ Premier is simply one of the greatest. Not only musically but professionally. Who has else has remained not only relevant but truly dominate for this long. Let us not forget [Gangstarr’s] ‘No More Mr. Nice Guy’ dropped 20 years ago. Today he is still making hits for everyone from Maroon 5 to Termanology. After what Premier did for Notorious B.I.G. on ‘Ready To Die’ he became the anchor for Hip-Hop. You made your pop track for radio but you had to have your Premo track for real Hip-Hop,” writes Festival Executive Director Wes Jackson. “But I have always admired was that while Premo was working with these huge acts and making good money he never let fame, success, or finances stop him from working with who he wanted. He answered calls and delivered hits for MOP and Royce [the 5’9’] just as quickly as he did for Nas and Jermaine Dupri. I want to thank Premier and his manager Phat Gary for helping us make our 5th Anniversary something for the record books.”
dead prez
Hip-Hop's freedom fighters dead prez have carried the mantle for social change and intellectual revolution for over 10 years. Steadfast in their commitment these social activists/artists are the true conscious of Hip-Hop. Stic Man and M-1 first burst on the scene as protégés of Brand Nubian's Lord Jamar. Jamar discovered them in New York and helped them sign a deal with Loud Records. But being the new kids on the block of a powerhouse label like Loud (home to the Wu-Tang Clan and Mobb Deep) wasn't easy. dead prez wasn't always Loud's priority but that didn't stop them from building a fan base around their over-the-top performances. They released the critically acclaimed "Let's Get Free" in 2000 which spawned the anthem "Hip-Hop." Other releases included 2003's "Turn Off The Radio", 2006's "Can't Sell Dope Forever" and several solo projects. On June 23rd they are releasing their new project with DJ Green Lantern entitled "Pulse Of The People."

Styles P
Styles P will be adding his no nonsense lyrical style to the 5th Annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival. As the landscape of hip-hop is changing with many eclectic artists labeled everything from emo-rap to hipster rap, there are still MCs who give you the streets, straight no chaser, no fairy tales, no lies. Styles P is one of the game's premier MCs with an unwavering and relentless delivery. Styles first stormed the scene as a member of The LOX. The trio consisting of Styles, Jadakiss and Sheek Louch were part of the original Ruff Ryders family that including DMX and Eve. The LOX released the classics, "Money, Power, Respect" and "Wild Out." After leaving Bad Boy the trio has embarked on successful solo careers. Styles P dropped his solo debut A Gangsta and A Gentlemen in 2002 and since has dropped two other solo albums and countless mixtapes. He recently released the hit single, "Blow Your Mind" with longtime producer and mentor Swizz Beats. Styles is one of the few MC's in the marketplace who can move between the mainstream and backpack/progressive space with ease and respect.
Grand Puba
Grand Puba, founding member of the legendary group Brand Nubian and living legend will be performing at this year’s 5th Annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival. Well respected for their intelligent and politically charged flow, Brand Nubian influenced many of today’s rap groups including Wu-Tang, Dead Prez, Black Star, and countless others. Brand Nubian’s leader Grand Puba was behind such classics singles such as “360 (What Goes Around Comes Around)” “Slow Down” and “I Like It.” Puba cemented his own solo career with the 1992 release of Reel to Reel and his follow up 2000 in 1995. He later reunited with Brand Nubian for the 1999 release Foundation which garnered rave reviews from fans and critics alike.
Grand Puba’s highly anticipated solo album, Retroactive, due out on June 23rd on Babygrande/Frank Radio Records. The album features Brand Nubian, Q-Tip, Dead Prez, and Kid Capri, with production from Lord Finesse, Q-Tip and Grand Puba himself. His signature high pitched socio-political flow and legendary status will be a welcomed addition to this year’s festival.
Uncle Ralph
Returning to host for the fourth time is Uncle Ralph McDaniels. As host of the uber significant "Video Music Box" and founder of OnFumes.com Ralph is in may ways the heart, soul and inspiration for The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. Video Music Box was one of the first TV programs ever to feature hip-hop videos primarily. Created in 1983 it was one of the most influential shows to give urban artists mainstream exposure. Many artists from Nas to Wu Tang to Biggie to 50 Cent to LL Cool J made their debuts on Video Music Box. Although ostensibly a local New York show, Video Music Box has been a major factor in the growth of Hip hop music and culture. Ralph's latest venture OnFumes.com takes that same pioneering spirit to the purely digital medium.
Smif N Wessun
Tek and Steele, formerly known as the Cocoa Brovaz, are pillars of Hip-Hop's Golden era, debuting on the scene in 1993 as members of the Boot Camp Clik. The duo made a memorable appearance on Black Moon's Enta Da Stage then later released their own classic debut, Dah Shinin'. Since then, Smif N Wessun have continued to make music and tour the world. Their New York grit and hardcore underground appeal have weathered the ever fluctuating hip-hop landscape from gangsta rap, to shiny suits. From ringtone rappers to hipster rap, Smif N' Wessun have stayed true to their sound resulting in a massive following the world over. They are currently prepping a new album for release this summer.
"As we prepare for the 5th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival, I think it's only right that Smif N Wessun are our first announcement. On more than one level they represent what the Festival is about. They repped Brooklyn before it became cool. Their longevity is something we hope to brag about one day. And as a part of Duck Down they are a beacon of entrepreneurship. Independent Hip-Hop and business done right," writes BHF Executive Director Wes Jackson. "From our 1st year Duck Down has supported us. From Buckshot to Sean P[rice] to Smif N Wessun. I think we are gonna name this slot on the lineup the Duck Down slot. Like an endowed chair."
Tanya Morgan
Tanya Morgan is a rap group. And that seems apparently clear after their soon-to-be-classic sophomore album, Brooklynati (out May 12 on Interdependent Media) started and earning them Native Tongue comparisons from the likes of Billboard, Vibe, Spin, and XXL Magazine. "Tanya Morgan are like the sons of De La Soul -- soulful, stressed, effortlessly smart flows, intricate production, the whole package," says SPIN Music Editor Charles Aaron. The trio from Brooklyn and Cincinnati produce their own beats and have crafted a concept album called Brooklynati, based on a fictionalized golden-era hip-hop utopia and their individual journies from the real world to get there. Features include Phonte from Little Brother, British expatriate Che Grand and buzz-worthy California MC Blu. The video for "So Damn Down" - the lead single from Brooklynati - is currently in rotation on MTVu and MTV Jamz, and featured on BrooklynBodega.com. Tanya Morgan recently toured with Wale and performed at The Roots Jam Session in NYC; they are currently organizing a "Brooklynati Summer Tour", coming soon to a city near you.
J Period
This year, Brooklyn Bodega & Mixtape King J.Period (www.jperiod.com) join forces for a special edition of "The J.Period Live Mixtape", an exciting 20 minute DJ performance featuring back-to-back special guests and surprise hip hop legends, produced by award-winning DJ, J.Period! Since 2006, J.Period has ignited BHF crowds by bringing his signature mixtape style to life on stage, with performances from hip hop icons like EPMD, Smif'n'Wessun, O.C., Crazy Legs (Rock Steady Crew), The Crooklyn Dodgers, Keith Murray and more! This year, rumor has it, legendary Brand Nubian frontman Grand Puba will join "The J.Period Live Mixtape"… but J.Period is keeping the rest of the roster top secret for now! Tune in as the show approaches for additional guest announcements.
With a long-list of accolades under his belt (2X Mixtape DJ of the Year, 3X MTV Top DJ) and a roster of A-List collaborators including The Roots, Lauryn Hill, Nas and Mary J. Blige, J.Period has earned a reputation for stellar quality and respect for true hip hop culture—two traits shared by the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival—making this collaboration one of BHF’s finest moments every year. This year’s "J.Period Live Mixtape" promises to be the best yet… but fans will have to show up to see what’s in store
Marco Polo and Torae
When it comes to beats and rhymes, Canadian producer Marco Polo and Brooklyn MC Torae don't play, just check the résumé. On his 2007 critically acclaimed album Port Authority, Polo recruited a who's who of MC's like Kool G Rap and Kardinal Offishall to ride over his hard-hitting, boom-bap instrumentals. Torae, on the other hand, has certified his rep as one of the game's illest lyricists in a similar fashion with remarkable wordplay on his highly touted 2008 street album Daily Conversation. So, in the spirit of great hip-hop duos, the producer and the MC signed with Duck Down Records (home of Buckshot, 9th Wonder, KRS-ONE, Sean Price, Smif N Wessun, and Kidz in the Hall) in 2009 to release their collaborative album Double Barrel.
Torae had this to add, "It's an honor to be included in this years BHF. I've been attending since day one as a fan & now to be part of the line up is amazing. People know I rep Brooklyn to the fullest, so to rock is what's up. Big shouts to [Festival Executive Director] Wes [Jackson], the Brooklyn Bodega, Duck Down Records & everyone involved in making it happen."
Homeboy Sandman
Home Boy Sandman
The Elmhurst, Queens MC is equally book smart and street smart, and most impressively, he showcases his atttude and aptitude on beats. Outside of music, Sandman earned an Ivy League diploma from U-Penn and a New York City teaching fellowship before he turned twenty-three. He made his formal debut with Nourishment (Second Helpings) a couple of years back. But his second album, Actual Factual Pterodactyl, released this past summer-along with an appearance in The Source magazine’s king-making “Unsigned Hype” column-cemented his move from under-under ground up –and-comer to an underground star who already up and came. Boy Sand’s lyricism is fundamentally playful, but he can instantaneously turn a relaxed stroll over a bouncy beat to a furious burst of invective.
Donny Goines
Brooklyn Bodega is proud to announce that Donny Goines will be bringing his relentless rhymes and no nonsense demeanor to the 5th Annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival. Donny Goines who is one of the exceptional youth who are born into a life surrounded by poverty and drugs, but are able to question their surroundings, and use their personal creativity to raise themselves out of their dire situation. Though the streets are a part of Donny Goine’s reality he uses his negative experiences to create positive lyrics and performances.
Recently, Donny offered his entire album The Breakfast Club for a free download on the internet, and has garnered a lot of respect and fans for this act. His most recent album Minute after Midnight was released May 19th. In the Bodega spirit, Donny Goines truly understands the importance of hip-hop being accessible to its community as well as allowing its members to be full participants.

Tiye Phoenix
Tiye Phoenix truly exceeds all boundaries of a female mc. She is a classically trained pianist, producer, songwriter, and composer. In the late 90’s Tiye formed S.O.U.L. Food Symphony, a D.C. based female group, which consisted of emcees, singers, and musicians. Tiye was later signed to Rawkus records and worked with label mates Mos Def and Talib Kweli. Tiye is also a member of the hip-hop group Polyrhythmaddicts which consists of members DJ Spinna, Shabaam Sahdeeq, and Mr. Complex. They released a critically acclaimed album Break Glass in 2007. Keys N Krates
The dynamic and innovated live band KeysNKrates will be the house band on June 20th at the 5th annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival. Made up of DJ Jr. Flo, keyboardist Matisse, and drummer Adam Tune, Keys N Krates combine the visceral intensity of live music with the progressive technology of electronic music. The trio remix classic hip-hop songs live, using turntables, audio, keyboards, and drums. Responsible for “reinventing the remix” KeysNKrates avant-garde performances are truly a sight to see. KeysNKrates sufficiently combine the old with the new providing fresh versions of classic hip hop tracks such as The Fugees “Fu Gee La”, A Tribe Called Quest “Check the Rhyme”, and Jay-z Public Service Announcement.” Fans will soon see that KeysNKrates have created a modern twist in their performances without losing the spirit of hip-hop.

Nyle
Philadelphia born and recent graduate of the Clive Davis school of Recorded Music of New York University, Nyle, is our last addition to the 2009 lineup. Nyle entered New York University the fall of 2005, as an aspiring rapper with a clear passion and drive for his artistry. The Clive Davis School is the first school of its kind to provide a B.F.A in Recorded Music. Its program offers professional training for students who aim to be creative entrepreneurs in the music industry. Nyle took his studies seriously, promising to release an album for each year in college. Nyle also became a staple within the New York City’s SinSin Circuit, a community of respected underground rappers. In 2007 he released his debut Album Frosh, which detailed his freshman year at NYU. It quickly garnered a buzz. In 2008 Nyle released his second album S’more a more experimental album that included samples and remixes of artist such as The Flaming Lips and Citizen cope. Nyle's talent was brought to the attention of many when a video was released of him and his class at the Clive Davis School performing a live remake of Lil Wayne’s “Let the Beat Build.” Including drums, violins, vocalists, piano, and guitars the video is electric and fresh. The video became an instant Internet darling. Nyle is a positive, young MC and Brooklyn Bodega is happy to give him an offline platform so we can all see what the buzz is about.

Eagle Nebula
Also holding it down for the ladies this year is Eagle Nebula. Described by some as an eccentric and witty female lyricist Eagle Nebula calls herself the "ghetto sage." She draws inspiration from artist such as De La Soul, Sun Ra, and Fela Kuti. Born and raised in California, Eagle Nebula harkens back to the golden age of hip-hop with lyrics that are fun, clever, and politically conscious. Her album Cosmic Headphones was released in October of 2008. It is a unique mix of funk and soul inspired beats interlaced with Nebula's poetic and energetic delivery. Eagle Nebula is creatively a breath of fresh air and new rhythms.

Chips back with a breath of fresh air for the entire industry. The trials and tribulations of life, love and music helped Chip conceive his latest project titled M.A2.T.H. (Music, Appreciation, Art, Time and Healing) -The new ciriculum. Though his style remains on the cutting-edge of hip-hop, as a solo artist Chip has much more room to be creative. Winner of the April ‘Show and Prove’
After a show stopping performance at last Thursday’s ‘Show and Prove’ Brooklyn Bodega, producers of The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival today announced the winner of the second installment of the competition. The winner is The Brown Bag All-Stars.
The group consisting of Audible Doctor, J57, Cold Codeine, Koncept, Soul Khan, E Holla, Element, and Goo helped pack the house at Public Assembly and thoroughly impressed the Bodega crew in attendance.
“I want to congratulate Brown Bag on a killer show last week. They hit the stage with energy and enthusiasm that was infectious. They made a lasting impression on all of us. I also want to thank Cymarshall Law and Mr. Beatz who helped us pack Public Assembly to capacity. Even they are not the winners they have our attention for sure,” Wes Jackson, Executive Director of The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival.
When asked what was it that Brown Bag did to seal the deal Jackson responded by saying, “They did a good job of translating their brand on stage. The vibe we got from their submission was this powerful group of Hip-Hop junkies ready to attack any stage. That was exactly what we felt. On a marketing level they brought out the most people. They spent time after the show speaking with our staff and gave us a better understanding of their mission. The show was well organized, concentrated and crisp. I enjoyed all the acts but at the end of the day they brought it on all levels.”
Semifinalists for the May 21st ‘Show and Prove’, the last before the Festival will be announced this week.
Brown Bag All Stars joined Children Of The Night as the first two of three finalists in the Show and Prove competition. There is still time to enter for May. Send links to audio and video content to showandprove@brooklynbodega.com.

in association with "The Classic Series" presented by Revive Da Live
First round of contestants announced plus special guests
Brooklyn Bodega announced today the first three contestants for “Show and Prove” The 2009 Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival competition to find the best opening act.
They are Children Of The Night (COTN), Wordspit, and Zyron Collective.
COTN is Remy Banks, Lansky & Versa hailing from Queens, New York. COTN is currently prepping their freshmen mixtape release "100%" http://www.cotnmusic.com
Wordspirit is Brooklyn born, Chris Dupree. Raised by a drug ailed mother and a street hustling musician as a father, he made his imagination his refuge. Since the third grade, Spit’s fluid freestyles and uncanny metaphors have moved from the lunchroom to the lights of center stage. http://www.myspace.com/wordspit.
Zyron Collective’s first album, “Welcome to Planet Zyron” with dynamic sounds similar to the legends of De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, and Pharcyde, the Zyron Collective has been able to reach out to fans of the old school style of hip hop. www.myspace.com/zyroncollective
In addition to the up and coming MC’s rocking the stage at Public Assembly on March 19th, Brooklyn Bodega is pleased to announce the addition of several special invited guests.
First up is the legendary DJ Rob Swift. A little bit about Rob: After years of honing his cuts on the wheels of steel under the tutelage of his older brother and father, Robert Aguilar aka Rob Swift was tapped, in 1991, by a Harlem-based DJ crew called the X-Men, later the X-Cutioners, to join their ranks. Within a year he won the coveted DMC East Coast title. Rob Swift continues his relentless pursuit of fresh directions, expanding his palette into the stratosphere. In April of 2007, he dropped "As the Tables Turn", a full length documentary DVD about his career from the past to the present.
Rob is also a part of The Cypher who are the featured band at the acclaimed Noisemakers with Peter Rosenberg. The Cipher and Revive Da Live will be debuting their "Classic Series" at "Show and Prove."
The “Classic Series” will be a part of the three “Show and Prove” events and feature performances from Rob Swift and The Cipher rocking live remixes from the Golden Years of Hip-Hop.
"I can honestly say that I've never heard another band outside of The Roots interpret hip hop better. I usually find bands that try to do it but it's flawed on so many levels but they just got the sound exactly right and translated it perfectly. " Peter Rosenberg- Hot 97
Each month Brooklyn Bodega will be inviting BHF Alumni and Bodega Family to join the competing MC’s. The idea is to one, give the people in attendance the best show possible. Secondly, to show the MC’s on the rise where the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival can take them. The Festival has been breaking artists since its inaugural year in 2005. The 1st Annual Festival featured a North Carolina trio named Little Brother performing for the 1st time in New York. 2006 hosted the New York debut of Lupe Fiasco. In 2007 it was Kidz In The Hall and Consequence. Last year it was Blu and Mickey Factz who went on to grace the cover of XXL as a part of the Class of 2008 after performing at the 4th annual Festival.
Joining Rob Swift as our special guest for the March 19th date will be Print and Good Day and Good Night. After performing at the 2nd Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival in 2006 Print has gone on to become a force in the Hip-Hop renaissance taking New York by storm.
On the wheels of steel will be Bodega Fam DJ Parler and DJ C.J. Browne.
“Show and Prove” will take place at Public Assembly, 70 North 6th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn March 19th, April 16th and May 21st.
At each month’s event a panel of judges including Brooklyn Bodega staff will select a winner. The three winners will become the ‘Show and Prove’ finalists. On June 1st the winner will be announced via email, Twitter, Facebook and on BrooklynBodega.com. The winner will open the Festival as well as win a prize pack from YUME and Festival sponsors.
