Official After Party with PPP

the deal is done
Official after party for the Festival on July 12th at Southpaw with the Platinum Pied Pipers and Friends

Official Announcement

The headliners of the Main Performance Day of the 2008 Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival have finally been announced. Legendary MC KRS ONE and DJ Premier will be leading the charge this year on July 12th along with Brooklyn's own Buckshot.

KRS ONE is widely recognized as one of the greatest MC's of all time with a career spanning over two decades. From 'Criminal Minded' to 'Edutainment' to 'Return Of The Boom Bap' KRS has delivered hit after genre defining hit. Also known as 'The Teacha' KRS has served as Hip-Hop's conscious and intellectual barometer while earning respect from every corner of the Hip-Hop Nation. This summer KRS will be re-launching the Stop The Violence Movement, his initiative to combat inner city violence. Brooklyn Bodega and The Brooklyn Hip- Hop Festival will also be working with the Stop The Violence Movement on their Summer calendar.

DJ Premier is one of the most celebrated and accomplished DJ's and producers in Hip-Hop. From Gangstarr to Nas to Jay Z to Janet Jackson to MOP to Dilated Peoples Premier has been a cornerstone of the culture. He has influenced a generation of beat makers with his trademark style and staying power. Premier's ability to make hits for pop stars, rap stars, trap stars and backpackers has made him one of the most sought after names in the business.

"I have always maintained that KRS ONE is the greatest MC of all time. Content, lyricism, cultural impact, longevity. There is no one better. KRS's views on metaphysics and philosophy which birthed the once controversial statement, 'I am Hip-Hop' shaped my view of the culture and my place within it. It was Kris who told us that one day there would be a Hip- Hop president and here we are with Barack Obama who is a fan of [Jay Z's] 'American Gangster.' The addition of Kris and Primo to this year's lineup is a great honor and a personal pleasure," Wes Jackson, BHF Executive Director.

Mr. Jackson also went on to say that the remaining lineup and details on additional events on July 11th and the official after party on July 12th will be released next week.

KRS ONE and DJ Premier

We are going to make the official announcement on Monday but I figured it was only right to leak this info to the Bodega fam 1st...

The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival is proud to announce the addition of
KRS ONE and DJ Premier to the 2008 lineup! These two living legends will join Brooklyn's own Buckshot on stage on July 12th at Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park.

Following in the tradition of Brand Nubian, Big Daddy Kane and Ghostface, KRS ONE will headline this year festivities. Widely recognized as one of the greatest MC's of all time KRS ONE recently celebrated 20 years in the game. From 'Criminal Minded' to 'By Any Means Necessary' to 'Return of the Boom Bap' KRS has been Hip-Hop's constant spiritual and philosophical leader. It will be an honor and a privilege to host the Blastmaster this year.

DJ Premier is quite simply a Hip-Hop super hero. He is without a doubt the most talented, down to earth, real producer or artist you can find. Along with KRS Premier has been a pillar for our culture since Gangstarr's 'Step In the Arena.' Primo has rocked with DITC, Biggie, Nas, MOP, Common, Jay, Mos, Rakim, and on on. Quite simply Primo is the man.

As we get closer to July more announcements will drop. Look for some neo-Soul love, some local champs, some out of town friends, and more.

Remember The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival is:
•July 10th at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple, Fort Greene
•July 11th in DUMBO
•July 12th, the Main Day at Empire-Fulton Ferry

And don't forget the 'Spit 16' Contest. We had to return to The Source to get that working right. More on that later.

We're for the Children

“Donors, friends, sponsors and partners I am pleased to announce that on July 12th we will be adding a new element to our Festival programming, Brooklyn Hip-Hop Family Day. For the early part of the day, specifically from 12-4 pm, we will have special programming for families and our younger fans. We like to think of it as a block party or family reunion for all the supporters of Brooklyn Bodega and The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. Our fantastic lineup of food and crafts vendors will be under the tent in the Tobacco Warehouse and on the grass in Empire Fulton Ferry State Park. Patrons will be able to enjoy the finest cuisine Brooklyn has to offer and sample the wares from the various designers and artists who will be in attendance.

Brooklyn Hip-Hop Family Day will also serve to shed the light on our cause issue this year, childhood obesity and the various afflictions associated with it. These diseases include asthma and diabetes, whose rates are abnormally high in inner city communities. Parents and youth alike need to understand what they can and must to do to protect their health. To that end, we are bringing in various organizations to jump start the education process. We will have food vendors specializing in healthy food alternatives, information on combating asthma triggers in the home, and to promote healthy activity we will have several local youth sports organizations in attendance.

We felt that adding Brooklyn Hip-Hop Family Day to The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival was key to our mission as the Festival reaches a wide age and gender demographic. Most Hip-Hop shows are dominated by young males while we have an almost 50/50 male/female ratio. And when those doors open at Empire Fulton Ferry State Park each year we see moms, dads, kids and even grandmothers. These are Hip-Hop families. Men and women who grew up on RUN DMC and KRS ONE. As much as we want to take care of our culture we at Brooklyn Bodega feel it is important we take care of ourselves and our families as well, both mentally and physically.

On July 12th bring your mom, your daughter, your niece, your nephew out to Empire Fulton Ferry State Park. From 12-4 pm we will take care of them and you. We will share a few tips with you, eat some good food and have an old fashioned block party.
Looking forward to seeing you all.”

Wes Jackson
President, Brooklyn Bodega
Executive Director, Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival

Brooklyn Hip-Hop Family will occur in the early part of the Main Day on July 12th from 12 noon to 4 p.m.
Music will be provided by the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival DJ’s.
Performances will begin promptly at 4p.m.

A word from Swift Rock the resident Barack Obama dude

When we started this thing we call the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival the idea was to produce a free show for the people underwritten by corporate sponsorship. Get those who could afford it to pay for those who couldn't. Bring Hip-Hop back to the people. Create a low stress, inclusive Hip-Hop event in the borough I call home, Brooklyn. We are very proud and happy that we have achieved our underlying goal. The Festival is not the biggest Hip-Hop event of the year or the one with the sickest talent but it is damn good and everyone who has come these past three years knows that.

What we haven't done is get the corporate dollars to buy our free lunch. Whether that be the quasi-recession, a fear of Hip-Hop by corporate America or just us falling short we have realized that depending on 3rd party corporate dollars is not the best business model. The best business model is the one being executed by our next President, Barack Obama.

Don't depend on the machine or the fat cats. Depend on those who matter - the people. The people are why we do this. It was the people who stood in the rain in 2006 to see Lupe and Kane, the people who bailed us out when Amp'd went bankrupt last year, and it was the people who believed in this pipe dream in 2005.

So to you, the people, I ask you to give $10 to our cause. That cause is SUPPORT CELEBRATE and REPRESENT Hip-Hop.
Save Hip-Hop from dangerous misperceptions, save it from bad press, save it from rappers going to Rikers for shooting people in the stomach. Let's leave those stories alone.
Let's talk about successful Hip-Hop businesses like Quanum Projects, Rap-A-Lot, Fusicology and Allhiphop. Let's talk about Dilla. Let's talk about Scott La Rock. Let's talk about fat caps and fat laces. Let's talk about Stop The Violence and Black Girls Rock. Let's talk about Kevin Powell running for Congress. Let's talk about Pac Div and The Cool Kids. Charlie K and Blitz. Lyricist Lounge and Subsoniq. Hip-Hop babies like Miles and Savannah.

If you're with me help us out. Volunteer. Donate. Tell A Friend.

Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival July 10th, 11th and 12th

Sincerely,

SwiftShot Shorty

Buckshot, Smif N Wessun, Bilal, Ladybug Mecca ANNOUNCED!!!

The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival, BrooklynBodega and boomBoom NYC made their first artist announcement today. Joining the month long celebration of Hip-Hop culture and the borough of Kings are Brooklyn and Duck Down's own Buckshot and Smif N Wessun, Neo Soul king Bilal, Mecca The Ladybug from the legendary Digable Planets, Chip Fu, as well as Chris Dave.

More announcements are to come and organizers have assured this is just a taste of what is shaping up to be a monumental event.

"We are honored to be joined by the likes of Buckshot, Bilal and Mecca. Buckshot is the original Brooklyn MC and he and the Boot Camp Clik/Duck Down family have been very supportive of the Festival from day one. We are happy to bring him home to perform in Brooklyn on the heels of his new album "The Formula" with 9th Wonder," said Festival Executive Director Wes Jackson. "Bilal performances are far too rare as far as we are concerned. We are looking forward to a sampling of all that new material he has been working on," Jackson continued. "And what can you say about Mecca? She has been repping for Brooklyn ever since she took home the Grammy with Digable Planets. This is going to be a great year for the Festival. Our best so far. Guaranteed."

Tickets for the Main Day are available at www.brooklyn bodega.com for a suggested donation of $10 patrons can have their tickets for the main day on July 12th mailed to them or pick them up at an official Festival retail location. For an additional donation supporters can also receive free product from Festival sponsor The Brooklyn Brewery, premiums on site, and reduced admission to all Festival events around Brooklyn.

The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival's mission is to provide high quality cultural programming at an economical price. To that end, producers are asking supporters for a minimum of $10 for the main date. All proceeds will be used to produce this and future Festivals.

Festival Production and Finance Director Ebonie Jackson, "We are asking everyone who attends for at least $10. At that price point the Festival is an absolute steal. Comparable events will charge in the hundreds of dollars. We won't do that. With the help of our sponsors, partners and most importantly the donors and fans who love Hip-Hop we pledge to keep all Festival events affordable. Affordable for struggling college students, single parents, up and coming poets, t-shirt designers, transit workers, and Mister Softee truck drivers. So to everyone out there who loves old school and new school, those who love Brooklyn, and those who like us want to show the best Hip-Hop has to offer please dig in those pockets and help. Do your part and SUPPORT CELBRATE and REPRESENT. "

Bilal, Mecca, Chip Fu, Smif N Wessun, and Chris Dave will be performing at The Masonic Temple in Fort Greene on July 10th. The event is produced by boomBoom NYC in conjunction with Brooklyn Bodega and The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival. Tickets are available at www.boomboo mnyc.com

Buckshot and The Boot Camp Clik will be performing at the main Festival Day at Empire Fulton Ferry State Park on July 12th.

Aspiring MC's looking for a shot to open up for Buckshot and others can enter the 'Spit 16' contest by calling 718-354-8777. Sign up and leave your best 16 Bars. One winner will win that opening slot. Stay tuned for more information on this contest. Brooklyn Bodega will be announcing a major media partner for the 'Spit 16' contest later this week.
