DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY: FEELIN’ DA HIGHS
It’s funny how, when you receive something in a mysterious manner, it’s entire existence can remain mysterious if you let it be. Some odd years ago, (five maybe) I downloaded this track from a friends computer onto my first generation iPod, which still, believe it or not, works. He’d gotten the track from a mix another friend had given him, and he didn’t know it’s origin, nor do I believe he cared.
I’d always thought it was J-Treds. And for years since, the source friend (not the one I’d gotten it from) had agreed. I would occasionally look for it in passing, whether at a record store, or when searching for random joints on Aquisition, but alas, I could never find it.
Today I randomly felt the urge to post it. After ripping it from my iPod, I figured I would call the source friend to ask him, “where did that J-Treds song come from?” He informed me that it was the B-Side of the “Fondle ‘Em Fossils” single, offa the Farewell To Fondle ‘Em compilation. Wow, I thought. How very unmysterious. It wasn’t on the full length comp, which I did have on cd when it came out in 2001 - but it was readily available all of this time.
Turns out it might not even be J-Treds at all. I looked up the ‘Fossils’ single to check for the actual name of the track… Feelin Da Highs. Made sense, and was close to what I had been searching for (Feelin Tha Highs) - but the artist was listed as Dysfunctional Family… not J-Treds. So now I’m wondering “who the hell is Dysfunctional Family?” I’d always assumed the track was a dusty J-Treds basement tape or something. Was Treds in a crew called Dysfunctional Family before Indelibles? Is he even generally related to them? Pardon me for referencing the painfully passe Austin Powers franchise, but I feel like some sort of hip hop Dr Evil right now, freshly defrosted and very confused.
Please, somebody. Call Bobbito if you have to. Shed some light.

I love that track. Definitely J-Treds. I’m not sure what “Dysfunctional Family” is.
