Summer of 2009 highlights

September 1, 2009 by Swift Rock Ski

As the summer comes to a close we got to thinking about some of the highlights. Please Add on:

1. The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival (of course). We shut the city down in the rain. Black Thought, Brand Nubian, Monch, Styles, Milk D. A dream come true

2. Big Daddy Kane in Prospect Park. Even though I had seen the classic version of BDK it was good to see the over 30 crowd mingling with the 25 and under Hip-Hop crowd. BDK is our Gap Band.

3. All Points West. The rain, the mud, and the lack of a tent was cold wack. I left a 1/4 way through Jay’s performance because of the drunk frat boys splashing mud on my adidas. However, Q-Tip’s performance was worth all of it. The Abstract Poetic ran through all the great new songs from ‘The Renaissance’, as well as classic Tribe joints. And he even through in some post jiggy gems from ‘Amplified’

4. Rock The Bells (in DC). I missed the NY show but from what I gather it was a much better gig than the Long Island gig. I had the honor of seeing a reunited Slum Village before the passing of the brother Baatin. I give thanks for that. Highlight #2 was Big Boi’s ‘Kryptonite’ live. Downside the soul crushing hangover from too much whiskey and cognac the night before.

5. The days without rain. They were few but we made the most of all of them.

6. The launch of Brooklyn Bodega Radio. I came in the game via radio and it was great to return. Shout out to PNC and A King.

7. The new office. May be smaller but the view of the river and other views are much better than the view of the office across Washington Street.

8. De La Soul at Nokia. I am not totally in love with the venue but I hadn’t seen De La in years. Thought it was gonna be all about 3 Feet High and Rising but they ran through al the classics. A great time indeed.

9. Show and Prove. We stumbled upon this great idea to give up and coming MC’s a chance and surprise, surprise it worked. We are gonna be breaking artists all year ’round.

10. All the lovely ladies who made the most of the sunny days see #5.

Brown Bag All Star’s Album Drops Today!

The Brown Bag AllStars are a breath of fresh air for hip-hop right now. Everyone’s been talking how that real hip-hop sound is  starting to permeate it’s way back into the pipeline and BBAS are very much a part of this  renaissance. They are all students of the craft and do everything  in-house from their music to their marketing. The fact that they can rip a live show that earned them a spot to perform in this years Brooklyn Hip-Hop festival is a  testament to the direction  in which they’re headed

Big Sean at SOB’s

We were thinking hard about getting Big Sean at BHF ‘09.
Some thought he would be to us what Lupe was in ‘06. Never happened but I did like homeboy’s stuff. Ou of Kanye’s disciples I like him more than Cudi, but that is not saying too much.

On a side note I must admit that I was humming Day N Nite on Sunday when I went to cop a cigar. So maybe the Cudi hating will end.

The Marathon Jigsaw Puzzle

July 16, 2009 by Swift Rock Ski

Marketing and building a business is a marathon. It is not a sprint.
I am so sick of people who think that one single marketing initiative is going to move the needle. One ad, one blast, one tweet will accomplish little to nothing. The Apple ‘1984’ commercial is a myth that a generation of phony executives have taken to be reality.

The reality is that your idea is not as good as you think it is. Your idea is not good enough to catch fire like whatever viral marketing fantasy you had last night.
The reality is that if you want success you have to:
1) Be ready to put in real work. Not double talk gobbily gook work. Real 10,12,14 hour, 7 days work
2) Be ready to take a loss. Lose all your money and eat potato chips for dinner type loss
3) Be able to communicate your idea. The knowledge gap between you and your customers is 10x wider than you think. Looking in the mirror you may see the next Rakim or Bathing Ape. What the people see is another rapper trying to pull on their heartstrings or another T-Shirt with a catchy slogan.

The reality is that 99% of the people you admire put in this type of work. Their ‘overnight’ success is part of a self-produced mythology. Nothing happens overnight.

I am not throwing stones. I have been guilty of every one of these transgressions but as I step back and assess what I (we) have accomplished I feel compelled to share this rant.

Achieving success as you may define it. Whether that be financial, social or spiritual is a complex jigsaw puzzle of many moving parts. Many that you will never see. There are so many people who are responsible for the success of New York’s largest Hip-Hop event that you never see. I am not talking about Pamela, Ajua, Beshou and the rest. I am talking about Christopher, Kellie, Jahmila, and Andrew. People who fought battles on our behalf without uttering a word. Had private one on one’s with NYPD Detectives, State Troopers and Deputy Commissioners and never mentioned a word to me.

Think about that when your arrogance gets the better of you and you speak or type before talking. There is value in relationships that go deeper than you can see. And when you burn that bridge you are taking your jigsaw puzzle and throwing it up in the air. Forget not being able to put them back, you may never find the piece again.
