DJ Brina Payne on the turntables. October 20th Public Assembly 70 North 6th Street Doors at 9, Show at 10 21+ $5 ------- October 20th "Show and Prove" Finalists announced kallae all day, zarinah, gypsy flesh, gnu Brooklyn, NY September 30th, 2009 We would like to thank all participants for their submissions. Please keep in mind, this is the second edition of our bi-monthly "Show and Prove" events this year. There will be plenty of opportunities for up and coming artists to rock with the Bodega. That being said, we would like to congratulate our October performers - GNU, Gypsy Flesh, Zarinah, and Kalae All Day as well as our special guest DJ for the night, DJ Brina Payne Our October finalists will show and prove their skills on stage at Public Assembly in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on Tuesday October 20th. "Following the success of the Show and Prove showcase/competition, I noticed the lack of a female presence on the stage, but recognized their strong presence in the crowd. It hit me that 'Show And Prove' is an obvious platform to show that Hip Hop is not gender struck. Without MC's like Rage, Bahamadia, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Rah Digga and so many more, Hip-Hop would not be what it is today. YUME and Brooklyn Bodega feel responsible to provide a launching point for emerging female MCs and artists who are so often overlooked." YUME Member Michael Peterson ------ A little about our finalists ------ gypsy flesh Gypsy Flesh STRENGTH, SUBSTANCE, STYLE, STREET & SOUL is defined in Most Women today, especially in this Emcee. Beautiful, young and talented this South Bronx native possesses a larger then life personality. Inspired by Michael Jackson, Lauryn Hill and Al Green, Gypsy is all about Inspiring Others. Whether through her Music or her constant commitment to her community through her non-profit organization, Gypsy's Big Heart shows when she's working with children. Hard at work on her EP, "The Evolution, her Music will add Inspiration for those that listen. Known for her thought provoking, concept driven, and inspirational sound, Gypsy the Emcee, the Entertainer, Business woman, and Leader is on the verge of being more than a STAR. ------ zarinah Zarinah Zarinah has been called a staple in the Philadelphia hip-hop community. She is known for her constant support. Being born and raised in Philadelphia she grew up in the illest eras of music. Taking a quick hiatus to the other side of the country, living in New Mexico for about 5 years is where a great deal of her Latin influences came from. Listening to various genres of music from alternative to soul she knew that music would change her life. She was involved in varying performing arts such as Hip Hop, Jazz and Afro-Modern dance which were studied at the Koresh Dance Company and with her own dance troupe. All the while taking various acting courses at the Wilma Theaters. At the same time she studied piano under the incomparable jazz pianist Dave Burrell and soon after studied vocals under the beautiful jazz vocalist Sherry Butler, former backup singer for Teddy Pendergrass. Soon after taking a break from dance and solely focusing on music, she decided that music would be her main focus. Being inspired by musicians such as the late great J Dilla, Beyonce, Black Milk, Carmen McCrae, Incubus, Lauryn Hill and Little Brother, Zarinah strives to make her own lane and earn the respect of her peers. Currently she is working on various collaborations with other artists such as Charlie K of Writtenhouse (Philly) KennStarr of the Low Budget Crew (DC) and Chaundon of the Justus League (NC), as well as her own projects which include: The Dope Becomes Her mixtape. ------ gnu GNU GNU, pronounced NEW, was formed by the hand of angels in 2035 BC. The all girl trio is now a full force musical movement of lyrical opuses and magnum cum louder! The group exists only in excerpts of stage performances and public stints.
