FOR RELEASE MARCH 17th, 2010, “AFROMATIKNEOHIPPIEROCK*SOLEMUZIK”
A soulful blend of hiphop flows and neo melodies from the “OG Lyrikal Bookbagger” herself. Kalae All Day has patiently and persistently worked on a debut album that will showcase her ability to sing, rap and everything in between. On March 17th 2010, her sultry voice will appease the die hard fans of soul, while her playful lyrics entertain hip hop heads world wide.
Love child of Jimi Hendrix and Lauryn Hill, emcee/singer/songwriter and self proclaimed “vandal,” Kalae “All Day” is swiftly making an impression in the underground Hip Hop scene. At the ripe age of 21, the Harlem native has done over 30 shows at popular city venues, such as Sputnik, The Knitting Factory, Public Assembly, Highline Ballroom, SouthPaw and Ashford and Simpsons Sugar Bar, and has opened up for rappers Jean Grae and Talib Kweli (Idle Warship) all since the summer of 2008. At an arresting 5′10 (6” with her afro) Kalae brings the energy and presence of a vet to her stage show and leaves the crowd in awe and begging for more.
“When people used to ask me what type of music i make, I initially jumped into defense mode; ‘why are you trynna box me in? I supercede genres..’ then i sorta took a step back and thought this person is trying to relate themselves to my music and we do that through labels.. So instead of trying to fit myself or push myself into someone elses market, like i would say ‘im neo-soul’ or ‘hip hop’ I eventually came up with my own genre, Afromatic-neo hippie-rockstar-soul music..”
On “AFROMATIKNEOHIPPIEROCK*SOLEMUSIC” you can expect a wide range of musical influences spanning from Soul to Electronic to Hip Hop and will playfully erase the line between mainstream and underground. It will include guest appearances by Homeboy Sandman, Mic Wilson (the rapper formerly known as Prezzure) and Likwuid and Baxter Wordsworth from Rebel Starr. Kalae also won Brooklyn Bodegas All Female “Show and Prove” showcase, CMJ Edition, on Oct.20th 2009 at Public Assembly.
The celebration takes place on March 19th for the release party at “Body&Soul Tattoo” on 1st st bet 1st ave and ave A at 8 pm.
For more on Kalae and to support her on way to the top you can find her on many popular social networks such as myspace, facebook, reverbnation, twitter, and hiphopsisters.com. Check out her blog at www.Kalaeallday.blogspot.com for more info.

"The future of NYC hip-hop" said Buckwild, famed producer, when speaking of MaG. Hip-Hop/Rap artist MaG, was born and raised in the birthplace of Hip-Hop, Bronx, NY. As he puts it: "I just hope the music I make can affect people in the way the music I listened to affected me. I want people to throw in a MaG joint and go ‘wow, this reminds me of how it used to be….this reminds me of how music is supposed to sound.’"
After two stalled attempts to release projects on independent labels St Joe Louis go it alone with their first release 30,000ft High & Rising. The title speaks to the increasing pressure to travel toward your dreams and is a nod to the seminal De La Soul “3ft High & Rising.” St Joe Louis is a trio composed of Elete, the group’s producer/emcee along with emcees Tom Chase and Michael Cardigan. 30,000ft features Skyzoo, PH (formerly pumpkinhead), Silent Knight and others.
Since 1997, MuAmin Collective has been moving their sound politics around underground communities and yo’ mama’s house. Made up of MC/poet Zion and producer/MC aLIVE, Muamin Collective has shared stages with classic hip-hop acts De La Soul, Pete Rock & The Coup and a diverse group of artists that range from R&B/soul in Conya Doss, to Punk Rock: This Moment In Black History and everything in between: Van Hunt. The diversity of influences equates to a diversity of listeners that stradle the globe as well generations. Only 1 winner walked away with the crown— she goes by the name of Kalae All Day!!!! Finalists of the show included: Zarinah, G.N.U., and Gypsy Flesh. We, at Brooklyn Bodega, would like to congratulate all the contestants on their fabulous performances! A huge thank you to all of you who came out and supported this positive movement of females in Hip Hop. The turn out was PHENOMENAL! The energy was hype and Public Assembly was overflowing with an amazing vibe. The ladies of Hip Hop certainly turned up the heat and demonstrated they too can engage a crowd of all ages and gender. “Our October ‘Show and Prove’ was our best attended yet. If there was any doubt that the ladies of Hip-Hop were not out there, that myth was dispelled at Public Assembly. While all the finalists did a spectacular job Kalae All Day’s charisma and stage show blew the crowd away. As a result of winning ‘Show and Prove’ she has a great opportunity to open up for a leader in our space, Talib Kweli. If you missed her show last month, I encourage you to head over to Southpaw and don’t make the same mistake twice. And all you MC’s and Hip-Hop soldiers – get ready cause we are gonna do it again on December 16th. The revolution continues.” –Wes Jackson, President of Brooklyn Bodega. ——- Brooklyn Bodega continues their mission in providing a unique platform for talented up and coming artists to show and prove their skill sets. CMJ RecapBy Jessica iHEARTDilla’ CMJ week is like a scavenger hunt. Your given a sheet with all the dope spots your suppose to hit, and you try your best to hit as many as possible collecting photographs and videos of who’s who of the underground scene. Armed with nothing but a camera and an everlasting love for hip hop, I ventured out to four CMJ events within four days running on nothing but 3 hours of sleep and an occasional glass of jack and coke. First up was Brooklyn Bodega’s Show and Prove: Something for the Ladies. I arrived at the venue around 7:30 p.m. to help with the set up. I was playing three roles that night: Hip Hop fan, editor in Chief of iHEARTDilla, which meant making connections and getting pictures with people, and Brooklyn Bodega staff member, which meant keeping track of the artist who were performing that night. The cool thing about Public Assembly that night was that there was another event going on in the next room, featuring Torae and Marco Polo, and Fresh Daily. The venue allowed people to switch from room to room for the price of one show. It was a hectic night to say the least. I was switching hats at the drop of dime, sometimes wearing several at the same time. At one point I found myself cheering as a genuine fan as I was trying to take the best picture of the performance for my site. Torae, Marco Polo, Fresh Daily, Blu, Children Of The Night, Homeboy Sandman, Sleepwalkas were some of the artists that were also in the building. Brazilian percussion influenced band TurnStylez & emcee Sciryl’s opened the show. During sets DJ Brina Payne was spinning on the one’s and two’s. The finalists of the show were Zarinah, G.N.U., Gypsy Flesh and Kalae All Day. Gypsy Flesh and Kalae All Day commanded the crowd very nicely. I found it very refreshing to see two stylistically different artists, Gypsy Flesh an Uptown native had a very gritty up-tempo sound and Harlem’s Kalae All Day the more soulful eclectic type, able to command the attention of the same group of people. Judging by the amount of sleep I got the night before, and how early I started my day, I can only attribute my ability to make it to Brooklyn Bodega’s CMJ event at DROM to my enthusiasm to finally meet hip hop group Pac Div. Along with the L.A “knuckleheadz” were performers Tanya Morgan, Those Chosen (also from California), Diamond District and Oddisee, Jesse Boykins III, and Kimberly Nichole. Yet again I was switching roles, this time playing the door. Luckily, I was able to make it to the crowd in time and try to see the performances. As I was recording footage during Jesse Boykins III set he came down from the stage to have some crowd interaction to sing along with him. He was turned down about four times before he reached me the one and only crowd participant. What followed was a very cringe worthy remix. Singers don’t worry I will be sticking to my day job! After each set Brooklyn Bodega’s favorite DJ, DJ Parler was spinning. Savannah Boogie act Those Chosen then took the stage. They ran through a strong set of songs “Spare Tire”, “Soundclash” and “The Feeling” from their upcoming EP “5ive” due on the Bodega’s new digital label. Next up was Diamond District and Oddisee. They are currently the talk of the Hip Hop town right now after releasing their album “In The Ruff” back in August. Judging by their performance and the response from the crowd, I’d say their buzz is rightly earned. Don Will and Von Pea of Tanya Morgan had a short but definitely sweet set. When they asked who had copped the Brooklynati album, the whole crowd screamed! It’s quite obvious New Yorkers love Tanya Morgan. Coming right off of the cusp of Tanya Morgan’s set was Pac Div. There was no sign of the momentum dropping during Pac Div’s performance, as they proceeded to shut shit down! With musicians merging from D.C. to California it’s great to see these underground artists, strive and reach the heart of New York City. Brooklyn Bodega shined once again! The week wasn’t over yet! I was on three hours of sleep. Luckily, I was able to sneak in a nap. If I didn’t do that I probably wouldn’t have been able to make it through the night. Red Bull’s don’t work on this gal! I hit up Brown Bag AllStar’s, “Brown Bag Thursday” at Voodoo Lounge that’s held every second Thursday of the month. This was pure, raw hip-hop. There was nothing glamorous about this venue. The artists to perform were M.B.C., MeccaGodzilla, Top $ Raz, NSR, and Jesse Abraham. DJ Ready Cee was the host of the evening. Coming to the stage first was Long Island native, MeccaGodzilla. He also brought out emcee Majesty and a spoken word poet by the name of Price Tag. Far Rockaway’s Top $ Raz definitely took full advantage of his set. He had DJ J. Monopoly scratch for him as he brought on singer Cheeki, and emcees Mike Love, Vithym and of course his brother from another mother, Kalil Kash. It’s obvious that Top $ Raz is getting well known in the underground scene as everyone in the crowd seemed to know the words to the songs he performed off of his new album, Spilled Milk. After the Brown Bag event I headed over to APT Lounge for the Roc Raida After party and had a very well deserved Jack & Coke…ah ha! There’s nothing like a strong drink after a long week of Hip-Hop. The Beatminerz, DJ Sucio Smash and DJ Evil Dee were on the one’s and two’s for the evening. It’s great to be able to work in this business and feel like you play a part in what goes on in the underground scene. Still sometimes, a girl just has to get away from all the business stuff and just be a fan. Aside from being noticed by Bodega affiliate Deephunk, I was able to blend in with the crowd as Foreign Exchange tore up the show at B.B. Kings. There were many newbies including myself to the Foreign Exchange, revival. Throughout their set Phonte made us feel as if we were at a church sermon having the crowd say, “AMEN!” He kept the crowd laughing with his hilarious relationship advice telling the fellas “if your girl wants those shoes and it ain’t costing you that much, just say ‘okay.’” Amen, to that! He also gave the crowd a surprise when he brought out, Rapper Big Pooh. And with their sharp suits to even sharper voices the show was a great experience to add to my many lists of concerts I’ve attended. So, there you have it. Hope all that attended showcases enjoyed CMJ Week and those that didn’t hopefully can make it out next year! Peace, Jessica iHEARTDilla Estevez CMJ EVENTS AROUND TOWNHaving trouble trying to decide which showcases to hit up? Use this handy breakdown to help you make those tough decisions. October 20th ——- October 20th “Show and Prove” Finalists announced We would like to thank all participants for their submissions. Please keep in mind, this is the second edition of our bi-monthly “Show and Prove” events this year. There will be plenty of opportunities for up and coming artists to rock with the Bodega. That being said, we would like to congratulate our October performers – GNU, Gypsy Flesh, Zarinah, and Kalae All Day as well as our special guest DJ for the night, DJ Brina Payne Our October finalists will show and prove their skills on stage at Public Assembly in Williamsburg, Brooklyn on Tuesday October 20th. “Following the success of the Show and Prove showcase/competition, I noticed the lack of a female presence on the stage, but recognized their strong presence in the crowd. It hit me that ‘Show And Prove’ is an obvious platform to show that Hip Hop is not gender struck. Without MC’s like Rage, Bahamadia, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Rah Digga and so many more, Hip-Hop would not be what it is today. YUME and Brooklyn Bodega feel responsible to provide a launching point for emerging female MCs and artists who are so often overlooked.” —— A little about our finalists Gypsy Flesh STRENGTH, SUBSTANCE, STYLE, STREET & SOUL is defined in Most Women today, especially in this Emcee.
